Explanation about the news

Surely several of the concepts of the news on the previous page are indecipherable for many, so we are going to try to make them as clear as possible.

The news tells us about two polymers, polyetheretherketone and polyethylene. To understand why they were used, let's review their properties.

Polyetheretherketone: Among its properties are a low coefficient of friction, high resistance to wear and tear or abrasion, to hydrolysis; damage from prolonged exposure to steam or water. It is chemically resistant and insoluble in common solvents including acids, salts and oils. And great stability in the face of high temperatures.

Polyethylene: Its melting point is 110 ºC and if it is reduced below its ambient temperature, it gains in hardness. Polyethylene is not a good conductor of heat or electricity.

Taking into account their properties, we can see why each one was used.
Polyetheretherketone was used for the casing due to its resistance to wear, wear, and friction. A case must be as resistant as possible, and this material has all the qualities that prove it.
Whereas Polyethylene was used because when it is below room temperature, which is most likely since it is inside a shell, it is very hard. In addition to not being a good driver, it would not give problems to the prosthesis.

    1. The electrons that form the polymer bonds are localized, that is, they are associated with a particular pair of atoms within the molecule and therefore cannot be moved. This is the reason why most polymers are insulators. (Diego)
